The USA U19 team got two goals from Tyler Madden (2018 draft eligible, Northeastern commit) as the Americans blanked the Russia U18 squad 5-0 to advance to Saturday’s gold medal championship game. Jake Kucharski (2018 draft eligible, Providence commit) stopped 21 shots for the shutout, Jack Dugan (VGK 2017 5th round pick, Providence commit) notched a goal and an assist, and Alex Steeves (undrafted, Notre Dame commit) added a pair of assists. Paul Cotter (2018 draft eligible, Western Michigan commit) opened the scoring in the first period, and then Madden netted the first of his two tallies in the second, before the floodgates opened in the third with goals from Madden, Nathan Smith (undrafted, Minnesota St commit), and Dugan.

Team USA will square off Saturday in a rematch with the Canada West U19 club, who defeated the Czech Republic U19 team by a score of 5-1 in the other semifinal match. The Russians and the Czechs will battle for Bronze on Friday in the consolation match.

The USA U19 squad punched their ticket to Thursday’s semi-finals with the 3-1 victory over the Swiss U18 squad. USA got first period tallies from Tyler Madden (2018 draft eligible, Northeastern commit) and Curtis Hall (2018 draft eligible, Yale commit), with Hall’s score coming on the power play 18 seconds before the end of the frame. The USA defense choked the Swiss, with Ryan Bischel (undrafted, Clarkson commit) facing just 15 shots en route to his first win of the tournament.

The Swiss halved the two-goal lead of the Americans early in the 2nd period on a Jeremi Gerber (2018 draft eligible) score, but Paul Cotter (2018 draft eligible, Western Michigan commit) restored the two-goal cushion in the 3rd. Blueliner Graham Lillibridge (undrafted, Yale commit) notched a pair of assists for the Americans.

The USA U19 team squares off against the Russian U18 team in the tournament semifinals on Thursday. The Canada West U19 team defeated the Canada East U19 squad in OT in the other quarterfinal match, and will face the Czech Republic U19 team in the other semifinal game on Thursday. The Swiss and Canada East will play Friday in one of the consolation matches, with the losers of the semifinals playing in the other consolation game Friday.

Cole Guttman opened the scoring early in the 2nd period and Golden Knight prospect Jack Dugan (Providence commit) scored the game winner with 32 seconds remaining to lift the USA U19 team over the Canada West U19 squad by a score of 2-1. Ross Armour (undrafted, Bemidji State commit) tallied for Canada West a scant 35 seconds after the Guttman marker, as the game was untied a total of 67 seconds in the match. Jake Kucharski (2018 draft eligible, Providence commit) outdueled Canadian goalie Zach Rose (undrafted) for the win. With the Preliminary matches concluded, the Czech Republic U19 paced Group B with a 2-0 record, USA U19 finished 1-1, and Canada West U19 completed with a 0-2 record.

In Group B action, the Russia U18 squeaked a 3-2 victory over the Swiss U18 team. With the win, Russia paced Group B with a 2-0 record, Canada East U19 finished 1-1, and the Swiss youngsters ended with a 0-2 record.

The quarterfinals kick off Wednesday with USA U19 taking on the Swiss U18 club, and the two Canadian teams East U19 and West U19 squaring off. Russia U18 and Czech Republic U19 earned quarterfinal byes by virtue of winning their respective Groups.

The USA U19 kicked off Group A preliminary play against the Czech Republic U19 team with Nick Perbix playing the 2nd defensive pair with his future St. Cloud fellow blueliner Brendan Bushy. Bushy is the current Dubuque Fighting Saint teammate of Cole Guttman, who sat out of the first preliminary game as a scratch. The Czech Republic opened their tournament Sunday with a 5-2 win against the Canada West U19 squad, and opened the scoring of this game at 9:55 of the 1st period with a shorthanded goal by Blainville-Boisbriand pivot Jan Hladonik (undrafted). Fifteen seconds later, Sam Hentges, another St. Cloud commit, would even the score with a power play marker for the Americans.

With forty seconds remaining in the 2nd period, the lethal Czech penalty kill would strike again as Ondrej Chrtek (undrafted) scored shorthanded to give the Czechs a 2-1 lead, but USA would once again knot the game midway through the 3rd with a Jack Dugan (VGK, 2017 5th round pick, Providence commit) tally. About five minutes later Chrtek scored his 2nd of the contest and would prove to be the game-winner, although the Czechs would add an empty netter from Matyas Zelingr (undrafted) with a minute remaining.

In Group B action, the Russia U18 team defeated Canada East U19 on Sunday 5-1, and then Canada East U19 defeated the Swiss U18 squad on Monday 4-3. On Tuesday, USA will square off against Canada West U19 to conclude their preliminary play, and Russia U18 with match up against the Swiss U18. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Wednesday, the semifinals on Thursday, the consolations games will be played Friday, and the tournament championship game on Saturday.
