The K-Wings completed an important weekend sweep of 6 of 6 possible points as they look to solidify a 2017 Kelly Cup playoff spot. The top 4 teams in each of the four ECHL divisions make the playoffs, and Kalamzoo current sits 4th in the Central Division, 6 points behind 3rd place Quad Cities, and 3 points ahead of 5th place Tulsa.

Lightning forward prospect Cameron Darcy scored his first goal as a K-Wing on a back-door tap-in from Bolt camper Ben Wilson, earning 3rd Star honors. Darcy has pointed in each of his first 3 games with Kalamzaoo. Fellow prospect Brian Hart started a tic-tac-toe play that resulted in the K-Wings' 6th and final goal of the game. Kalamazoo travels back to the Quad Cities for another important game Wednesday night, before a 3-in-3 next weekend with Brampton, Toledo, and Adirondack.

Quad City opened the scoring 8 minutes into the game, but Riopel slammed the door the rest of the way as the K-Wings took 4 points off the 3rd place Mallards this weekend and closed the gap to just 6 points behind. Lightning forward prospect Cameron Darcy assisted on the empty netter with just 30 seconds left. Kalamazoo hosts the Cyclones Sunday afternoon.

Kalamazoo returns home Saturday night to complete the home-and-home with Quad City, and then takes on the visiting Cincinnati Cyclones for a Sunday afternoon tilt.

NHL Preseason Game Night: 9-30-16

Lightning miss a second straight preseason shutout by an eyelash.

TB-2
CAR-1 (OT)

Andrei Vasilevskiy allowed just 1 goal on 28 shots for the OT win. The lone blemish was a goal surrendered in a 6-on-4 situation with 1:05 left in regulation. If the performances of the past two nights by Gudlevskis and Vasilevskiy are any indication, Yzerman might have the flexibility he needs if he does choose to move Ben Bishop for cap reasons.

First Period
5:21 TB Johnson (1), (Palat, Nesterov)[/b]

Second Period
NO SCORING

Third Period
18:55 CAR Skinner (2), (DiGiuseppe, Rask)

Overtime
1:38 TB Palat (1), (unassisted)

Ondrej Palat and Tyler Johnson were the game's first and second stars, as the usual suspects start to calibrate their game for the regular season.

Very interesting lineup tonight from the Lightning and a pleasantly surprising performance. Tonight's group mixed in more NHL forwards, at least on the wings, but they pretty much went with Syracuse's defensive corps plus Nikita Nesterov, who may be a bubble player in this camp. It helps when you have Vasilevskiy behind you, but to almost get a shutout with that group is not too shabby.

Centers
Tanner Richard had 2 penalty minutes and 1 shot in 17:35. He was also 33% on 12 draws. Please, Jeff Halpern, teach these kids to win faceoffs.

Brayden Point had 4 penalty minutes and 1 shot in 16:09. He was also 33% on 9 draws. Sorry, son, you don't get to score a goal every game.

Cam Darcy had 1 hit and 1 blocked shot in 11:31 and was 30% on 10 draws. PLEASE, Jeff Halpern, teach these kids to win faceoffs.

Wingers
Joel Vermin had 1 shot, 1 hit, and 1 blocked shot in 18:44.

Gabriel Dumont had 1 shot, 4 hits, and 4 blocked shots in 14:02. For a guy who didn't score, his stat line still looks quite active, I have to say.

Henri Ikonen had 1 blocked shot in 14:15. The window is closing on the young Finn.

Brian Hart had 4 hits in 10:14. He then hit someone with an aluminum chair and put them in the Sharpshooter.

Defensemen
Luke Witkowski was +1 with 4 hits and 2 blocked shots in 21:10. He's not giving any quarter in camp to anybody.

Dominik Masin had 2 penalty minutes, 2 shots, and 2 hits in 19:55.

Matt Taormina had 1 shot in 19:46.

Dylan Blujus had 3 blocked shots in 19:29.

Jake Dotchin had 2 penalty minutes, 1 hit, and 2 blocked shots in 19:10.

Darcy Making Most of Opportunity with Crunch

By Jeremy Houghtaling

Cameron Darcy scored his first professional goal Saturday. Maybe.

The Syracuse Crunch forward’s shot from the slot went into a crowd in front of the Toronto net, ended up in the back of the net, and was initially waved off due to a hand pass. After a video review, Darcy was awarded the game-tying goal that sent the game to overtime, but the tape has since been sent to the American Hockey League for verification.

Darcy isn’t sweating his stats. Instead, with so many players called up to the Tampa Bay Lightning, the rookie center is focused on making the most of his opportunity to be a regular in the Crunch lineup.

“Every time I’m on the ice and every game I get in, I get a chance to prove who I am as a player and I try to show the coaching staff that I can play the game well and I can make a difference when I’m in there,” Darcy said after practice on Monday. “I just need to take advantage of every opportunity I’m put in and just roll with it.”

SYR Darcy, (1) (Erne, Vermin), 17:39

Overtime
TOR Valiev, (2) (Kapanen), 2:21

Cameron Darcy and Yanni Gourde were the game's second and third stars.

Kind of like the Lightning up top, tonight the Crunch sought redemption against a stacked Marlies team that embarrassed them the last time the two teams met. And, like the Lightning, the Crunch proved they can compete against a top flight team. The fact they pulled out a point was the differing story line, and one that Tampa Bay can envy.

Ontario Hockey League

North Bay Battalion 3 @ Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 4 (SO)

D Anthony DeAngelo, SOO: 1-0-1, +3, 7 PIM
With SSM: 9 GP, 3-12-15, +6, 17 PIM
With Sarnia: 29 GP, 10-28-38, +1, 64 PIM

2013-14 totals: 51 GP, 15-56-71, -34, 90 PIM

DeAngelo's point streak hit eight games with a first period marker that put the powerhouse that his club is up by three and he engaged in a round of fisticuffs that might very well have made some of the denizens of his hometown proud. It bears repeating that the Soo still hasn’t lost since DeAngelo (and others) were acquired at the OHL trade deadline.

Windsor Spitfires 2 @ Plymouth Whalers 3 (SO)

W Cristiano DiGiacinto, WSR: 0-1-1, +2, 2 PIM
Season totals: 42 GP, 15-17-32, -7, 83 PIM
2013-14 totals: 50 GP, 17-11-28, +8, 101 PIM

Windsor erased two deficits to push the game on into extra time only to fall in the skills competition. Scoreless in Windsor's last game, DiGiacinto provided a secondary dish that made for his fourth point in his last four games.

Ottawa 67's 4 @ Peterborough Petes 2

D Dominik Masin, PBO: 0-0-0, E, 2 PIM
Season totals: 37 GP, 7-13-20, -19, 57 PIM
2013-14 totals: 39 GP, 2-19-21, +6, 102 PIM

Brandon Wheat Kings 6 @ Moose Jaw Warriors 0

C Brayden Point, MJ: 0-0-0, -1, 5 PIM
Season totals: 39 GP, 21-33-54, +9, 32 PIM
2013-14 totals: 72 GP, 36-55-91, -27, 53 PIM

Point was reduced to denting the score sheet being credited with a fight -- his second of the season -- and that about tells you all you need to know for how things were going for Moose Jaw on the ice Saturday night.

Edmonton Oil Kings 0 @ Calgary Hitmen 5

D Ben Thomas, CAL: Did not play
Season totals: 39 GP, 5-16-21, +6, 18 PIM
2013-14 totals: 72 GP, 7-24-31, +11, 39 PIM
